Your Mom was right when she told you to eat your veggies so you could grow healthy and strong. Even beloved cartoon character, Popeye believed , “I’ll be strong to the finish, cause I eat my spinach.” As much as some don’t like the thought of eating anything green, there’s some proof that doing that could actually save your life.

Doug Kauffmann, popular host of Know the Cause, (seen daily on Dish Network, Direct TV, and the CW) recently wrote an article that reveals findings from scientists about the power of green vegetables. Doug, who has 40 years of experience in health matters, is a strong believer in diet and exercise. He was so excited to find out that scientists are now proving what he has been saying for years! Below is an excerpt of this article. For more information visit www.knowthecause.com.

On the sixth day, for the benefit of “everything that has breath of life in it,” God gave us every green plant for food. Such a seemingly simple gift, but what God knew long before the sixth day, scientists are just now beginning to unravel. Why is this notable in this month’s KNOW THIS? Because, without even knowing it, scientists have just confirmed so many of our fungal/mycotoxin hypotheses.

For many years, scientists have proposed that we all eat fruits and vegetables daily. I’m guessing that they mean “fresh,” however, many medical websites do not differentiate between fresh or canned. The American Cancer Society tells us to eat five daily servings of fruits and vegetables in an effort to prevent cancer, but also teaches, “that recommendation goes for cancer patients, too.” Although they don’t expound upon it, they are recommending dietary treatment for cancer patients-and wisely so, as you will read. Why are fruits and vegetables so good to eat? Few traditional medical websites offer any true science to this dietary recommendation in favor of telling us what the ACS website says; “they are good for you.” How good has just been proven.

Last month, English researchers, collaborating with scientists from Oregon State University, discovered why eating green vegetables actually worked in preventing, and perhaps treating, diseases like mycotoxin induced cancers. Their discovery is nothing new to us FUPO heads (fungus until proven otherwise), who realized the value of antifungal foods long ago, but it must have fellow scientists scratching their heads; you mean fungus can cause cancer and green vegetables can prevent and/or treat it? Trust me, I am thrilled as they begin to put the pieces of the cancer puzzle together.

Drs. Graham Bench and Ken Turtletaub decided to test the effect of green vegetables on cancer in their Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in England. Even they, it appears, did not know that green vegetables had such powerful effects inside the human body, but they did know how to cause cancer-with fungal poisons. The researchers administered “a microdose of radio-labeled aflatoxin to assess the actions of the carcinogen (cancer causing agent) directly on people.” They carefully infused very tiny, but traceable, doses of this corn and peanut mycotoxin into people. “Oddly enough” they would remark, “it would appear that the active ingredients in vegetables are chlorophyll and chlorophyllin.” They then used this chlorophyll, extracted from spinach, broccoli and kale, and infused it into the same people and discovered that chlorophyll “reduce the effects of aflatoxin poisoning.”

Do you realize the magnitude of this one study? Here is what many scientists are realizing today as they review this important article;

Fungus causes mycotoxins and mycotoxins cause cancer.
The ACS now understands why their recommended daily servings of vegetables prevent and treat cancer.
Green vegetables are antifungal.
Green vegetables treat cancer.
Green vegetables prevent cancer.
The Phase One Diet has just been scientifically validated. (see www.knowthecause.com for complete recipe details)

In a perfect world, every cancer specialist (oncologist) in America would now be mandated to retrain. None of this was taught in medical school and yet erroneous information is being recommended daily in cancer institutes (“don’t be silly, there is no diet link to cancer!”). Fortunately, soon will come identical mycotoxin information on the ability of other than green vegetables, and even fruit, to prevent and treat cancer, followed by the acknowledgement that meat tainted with antibiotics and added hormones causes cancer.

We are falsely led to believe that dietary information dispensed in medical science is advanced. In reality, it is in its infancy. Their admonition that diet and disease are not linked should have us all rethinking our approaches to wellness. Fear not, because with time comes change; four out of five physicians no longer smoke Camels and many are questioning the inappropriateness of alliances with soda pop and pharmaceutical companies. It will take some time, but change is underway.

I leave KNOW THIS readers with this thought. You can stand by and wait until this change has occurred, or based on this one simple research paper, you can become proactive in your own cancer prevention program. The choice is not your doctor’s. Going green is such a great idea, especially when you eat it!

Far too often we are prone to think of our relationship to God in terms of whether or not we will make it into heaven or be banished to an eternal existence in hell. Our understanding may be tainted with the idea of our position with the almighty Creator and our view of the “good news” is limited to the view of our “standing” with Him. As much as we might want to think of this as the “good news” it really isn’t. The truth is that God himself is the “good news” not the things He has to offer.

The stark difference is in the direction of our thinking. When we focus on our standing and how it might eternally benefit us, we our thinking foremost on ourselves. God loves each of us unconditionally in spite of our condition and desires to have a relationship with us as His children. Who among us would want our children to value us only on the basis of what we can give them. “Mom, I really don’t want a relationship with you but I do want you to cook and clean up after me”. Imagine how such actions must grieve God’s heart. We are instructed to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. Jesus said that this was the greatest commandment. ( Matt 22:37) Unfortunately this love doesn’t come without constant and continual effort on our part. How often have any of us come to daily devotions as a sense of obligation rather than a longing to spend time with Him for the sake of spending time with Him? When we make the effort to come into His presence something unexplainable happens. Our demeanor changes, His peace comes upon us and we are renewed spiritually.

When we are apart from Him we cannot even begin to sense His presence or recall the wonderful experience of being there. His peace is a gift that He is willing to give over and over again. Sometimes we rely too heavily on church alone to gain a spiritual renewal. Our frequent gathering together is very important. During the past couple of weeks we were unable to have church services due to blizzard conditions. I truly miss the time of fellowship and prayer and praise we regularly enjoy on Sunday. I look forward to those times, we usually arrive early with an eager anticipation of the service to come. Sadly, in almost every church across America a large number of people lumber in during the first fifteen minutes of the service. At the beginning of the service only a remnant of the group is in place anxiously awaiting the start of worship. This I believe is a picture of the condition of our hearts and how we have come to reduce the “good news” to a status quo and an obligation. As an alternative we need to seek His presence every day and seek His peace and renewal as a way of life. As a result perhaps we will run toward Him at every chance, especially on Sunday desiring to be in His presence. Why not run toward our “heavenly Dad” for the sake of being with Him rather than reducing our relationship to the mere gifts He has to give?

I hope that headline grabbed your attention! It should!

Some of you have been waiting for this station to begin airing for ten years. Although it was the Federal Communications Commission who first made the frequency available for the region, the process is slow and costly. We believe we are reaching the end of this long road to “flipping the switch” and have every reason to believe that, despite a few remaining “unknowns”, we are planning our on-air Grand Opening this Labor Day Weekend!

“The switch” get’s flipped – we’re ON THE AIR!

Total estimated in “worst-case scenario” – 26 weeks – August 27, 2010.

Also, here is what will be happening simultaneously which involves other preparations for “air”:

Station Construction

Purchase of on-air, audio Mixing Board – to save money, John, Andy and Jeff are looking for quality used gear from an active manufacturer (to ensure the ability to acquire repair parts)

Final wiring and studio preparation

Schedule 88.7 TheBridge presence at any and all significant community events on Delmarva

Continue to update the website to encourage visits and donations

Continue our visits with area business leaders to discuss sponsorship opportunities

Plan a “Grand Opening” event to include music, speakers and more

We hope this news is as exciting to you as it is to us! It certainly comes as a breath of fresh air and energy to he volunteers who’ve been on this project for a decade.

Our volunteers could certainly use some support from you! Yes, you! You who are reading this update, who know that when this station does go on the air you will see the benefits to not only your own personal walk with Jesus but also to your family, friends, neighbors and complete strangers. This station is going to be a local mission of sorts. Many people will find that they are no longer alone in their walk with God. They never really were, but TheBridge will live up to it’s name by Bridging the gap between the numerous denominations of Christian faith on Delmarva.

We will learn to love one another as never before because it’s very difficult to dislike someone after you get to know them and their families. It’s hard to lambaste a belief structure while you’re praising God in their church building. It will be difficult to ignore the fact that when the Bible speaks of the Church it means you and me and them and those people over there.

Jesus is Lord of all. Please join us in prayer for this station, that our roadblocks are cleared, that our goals of Connecting and Strengthening are achieved. Every major forward motion in the process of this station has come at the foot of the cross of Christ. Please join us there.

Now is the time to discuss our $10 proposition.

We are asking every Christian family on Delmarva to prayerfully consider putting aside $10 per month to support this effort, this local mission which will serve and benefit not only your family but so many others. We know that $10 per month is a tiny amount of money. We also know that there are some families who couldn’t even spare $10 per month while others could spare $100. It isn’t about equal giving, it’s about equal sacrifice.

The idea that a 25,000 watt radio station devoted to Christ is even allowed by our Federal Government is a blessing from God. That we can still practice and express our faith in this country is a blessing. The opportunity to serve the world through our wealth is a blessing. But as our freedoms seem to be shrinking and our society’s morals crumbling the need to increase in numbers and to walk with the power and strength of Jesus Christ is paramount.

It has been said, if you change the boy, you’ve changed a man. If you change a man, you change his family. If you change a family, you change a neighborhood. If you change a neighborhood, you change the city. If you change a city you change a region, state and country. If you change a country, you change the world. It all starts with one person.

Our efforts to bring us together in our love for Christ and thus change lives comes at a cost.

$10 per month.

Will you talk to your family about this tonight?

Will you join and partner with us in building this Bridge?

$10 per month.

Look to the right of this web page…. you can conveniently donate monthly, automatically if you wish, using our online account with paypal.

May God be with you.

Most of us would agree that our culture has become a very sexually saturated place to live. Many products, movies, TV series, the news, and so forth are sold and promoted with sex. Has anyone seen the recent M&M’s commercial? Antimated M&M candy characters are now sexy!!

As the divorce rate continues to rage at high percentages, as unfaithfulness in marriage continues, as sexual addictions in men become a major issue affecting the stability of the family, the sex is still everywhere. Obviously couples that have encountered infidelity of either the husband or wife, have faced the most challenging time of their lives. To keep the marriage, or not? Repentance or not? To tell or not? Whether or not there has been an affair in the relationship, here are some facts and tips to encourage fidelity and trust in the relationship:

1) Maintain boundaries that include barriers between you and those who would be a threat, and openness with the one you love and wish to maintain fidelity.

2) The workplace is a major danger zone. Avoid private lunches, travel traps like hotel rooms, personal emails and chats with opposite sex co-workers or clients.

3) No “rescuing” of needy co-workers of the opposite sex, who need someone to vent their personal issues, especially when it has to do with a spouse’s shortcomings.

4) Discuss your relationship woes with your own husband or wife. This type of communication in an assertive manner (as discussed in previous blogs) enhances connection and understanding between spouses.

5) Avoid reconnecting with ”old flames” that could re-ignite. Statistics show that affairs with old flames many times will turn into long term relationships, moreso than people you’ve just met. Class reunions are best attended by the couple.

6) Beware of online communications. Chat rooms, e-mails, instant messaging, game sites, Facebook, My Space, and such, lend themselves to sharing too personal of information simply because you are not face to face with the person.

7) Make your good friends and social connections be of like mindedness to you. Pro-marriage, pro-fidelity, friends support marriage and support your marriage. Good friends are on the side of the marriage and want the best for both people and their children.

I hope these are helpful suggestions. I would recommend the book Not Just Friends by Shirley Glass who elaborates on these suggestions and helps couples understand the workings of affairs.

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” Romans 12:9 ESV

by Mitch Temple

Life has a way of chipping away at our marriages: jobs and job related travel, in-laws, church activities, activities with the kids, conflict and misunderstandings. Most of us run at the speed of light, wake up one day and realize, “Huh. I don’t feel very close to my spouse anymore.” The truth is that it happens to the best of us.

Here are a few simple methods I have learned throughout the years to revive romance in a stale marriage.

Start Dating Again

Go out at least once a week. It doesn’t have to be an expensive date – just something simple.

A brown bag dinner in the park, a walk around the lake, a cup of cappuccino at a coffee shop or simply putting the kids to bed early and just talking will often do the trick. Or, revisit the things that you did when you were dating, like going to a movie, the theatre or a nice relaxing dinner for two.

After being “pulled apart” by all the pressures of modern life, it is imperative to reconnect each week. If you don’t, you won’t feel close.

Make Yourself Attractive

Here’s the irony: If you make yourself more attractive, your spouse will often become more attractive to you. Quite often, changes that you make in your appearance can precipitate changes in your spouse just as positive actions often breed positive reactions.

Other suggestions:

Go to the gym together.

Walk with your spouse three to five times a week.

Buy new clothes, and throw out those ugly sleep shirts/pajamas.

Change habits.

Shave the beard (men only), or change your hairstyle.

Get new eye glasses, or try contacts.

Make a List

Determine what it is that makes you feel attracted to someone. What attracted you to your partner in the first place? What are the things that you find attractive that you would like to see in your spouse? What gets your attention?

Communicate Your Desires to Your Spouse

Do so in non-threatening, judgmental ways.

For example, you could say, “Honey, let’s make some changes. We are both in a rut. We’ve changed over the years and lost some of the spark in our marriage. Let’s change how we treat each other. Let’s call each other during the day at work. Let’s change how we look. Let’s walk together each evening.”

Avoid using “you” statements. Use “I feel” or “I need” instead.

Try writing a letter as an alternative to face to face communication, especially if you feel they will react negatively.

Do Your Research

Attraction doesn’t just occur in a marriage. It is something that must be worked at. Often the process of bringing attraction back begins with education and basic communication. Read books and research articles on the Web that discuss reviving romance and attraction.

Do Good Things – Daily

Doing goods things doesn’t necessarily require spending a lot of money. Simple things, like picking up your dirty underwear, giving a free back rub, preparing dinner, writing an appreciative note, hand picking flowers or taking on a chore that your partner normally does, build intimacy and closeness in your marriage like nothing else.

Attraction often follows on the heels of serving each other like you did in the early years of your relationship. Often it’s the little things that count – not the big ones.

I know by now, most of you are so done with all the snow we have had. I know I am. I can’t remember this much snow since the blizzard of 1979. I think we might have topped that one. Even though everyone probably has “cabin fever” by now, I think we can learn great lessons from a storm.

The day before the first storm hit, I was doing my devotions and I happened to be reading Psalm 147 (NIV). I got down to verse 15 and I was so surprised at what it said, “He sends his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly. He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes. He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?” Wow! I hadn’t remembered ever reading a scripture so specific about snow and ice before. I knew it was coming from what the weather man had said, but this was so powerful. Lesson #1 – GOD’S POWER IS AMAZING. All He has to do is say the WORD and it’s done. It reminded me about reading through creation and how God just spoke things into being. Even though the “icy blast” part of the scripture sounds scary and you wonder how you will make it through the storm, God always shows you in his word that he will protect you can take care of you. Verse 18 in that same Psalm says, “He sends his word and melts them; he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

With all this snow, there wasn’t alot of traveling going on. Some people, including my family, even lost electricity for a while. Lesson #2 BE STILL AND KNOW THAT HE IS GOD. The quietness of a house with no electricity is almost deafening. I think God uses these times to get us to slow down and be still. Sometimes we can be overwhelmed with the storm raging outside. I am reminded of a song written a few years back by Chrisitan artist, Scott Krippayne called “Sometimes He Calms the Storm.” The chorus says, “Sometimes he calms the storm with a whisper…Peace Be Still…He can settle any sea, but it doesn’t mean he will. Sometimes he holds us close and lets the wind and waves go wild. Sometimes he calms the storm and other times he calms his child.” During the time with no electricty, our house started getting very cold. I was getting a little stressed and my attitude was not the best. The Lord took me to Proverbs 31 where I could read about The Wife of Noble Character. He calmed me and gave me peace when I read verse 21, “When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.” Once again the Lord had used a scripture about snow during this storm. Wow! He is so awesome.

Lesson #3 HE WASHES US WHITE AS SNOW. Have you noticed how amazing and pure white the snow is? When the sun is shining and it reflects off the snow, it is almost blinding. Psalm 51:7 (NIV) says, “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean: wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” Thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and his cleansing blood we can be made clean and our sins washed away. If we know him as our savior and we “reflect” his light, imagine how bright our light will shine for him.

I hope you’ve enjoyed some “down time” during this storm and that you have felt the power, stillness and brightness of Jesus.

For me, last week was a week of involvement with kids. On Tuesday I conducted the chapel message for a group of 5th through 8th grade kids at our school. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed interacting with the students and feeding off their enthusiasm. I spoke to them about differences between people and how God created all of us to be unique. Too often we allow the differences we find in others as reasons to separate ourselves rather than exploring and understanding what makes them different. When you think about it, the world would be a pretty boring place if everyone was alike.
One of the first things I did with the kids for an ice breaker was to ask them to form two groups. Much to my surprise all of the girls went to one group and the boys the other. Basic difference! Wow, it’s been quite some time since I was in grade school and I had almost forgotten the social parameters of that age group. They are growing up in a time that has changed drastically from decades before. When I was their age we were still watching black and white TV with rabbit ear antennas trying to negotiate a less than fuzzy picture on one of the three stations we had to choose from. (There seemed to be more to watch than I can find on the several hundred stations of today.) People generally had one car, soda and milk came in glass bottles, there was one movie at the cinema that ran for three days, gasoline was pumped by the filling station attendant (who also would check under the hood and clean your windshield) and kids played outside after school. Life was somewhat different then but the challenges of interpersonal relationships may be much the same.
On Saturday we ventured back to Maryland to watch the grandkids play basketball. It’s slightly ironic but one thing that has changed is teams that consist of both boy and girl players. Hold the phone, doesn’t this violate the laws of nature concerning the social protocols for that age. Maybe we are bridging the difference gap after all. This could take some getting used to. In my day it would have been hard to show your face after having your shot blocked by a girl. Maybe some old ideas need to be changed. Perhaps the world would be a better place if we all tried to find the good woven amongst the differences we find in others. Most of us are familiar with the Ten Commandments, however Jesus condensed them all in to just two. (Matt. 22:37-39) Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. It’s a very simple formula for what can be a very rewarding lifestyle.
Our great difficulty on Saturday was cheering for two teams in the same game. You see we had a grandchild on each team so we were the recipients of excitement on both ends of the court. It was great watching both of them learn the game of basketball especially at the considerate direction of both of their coaches, my two sons. As our family (including my mom and dad) hoarded most of the seats at one end of the arena, I thought about the terrific opportunity we have to pass on values to each “next generation”. We had four generations present at one kids basketball game representing a lot of memories and marking the passing of time.
We are all unique. Our situations are unique, our family structures are unique, our spiritual gifts are unique and God’s purpose for each of us is special in His great plan. He calls for us to compliment each other by using our differences for the greater good. We are meant to fit together like a pieces of a puzzle. Even when we disagree, He grants us the ability to be one in unity. This miraculous commodity can only be found in the center of His grace. Not by striving to make it so, only by accepting that it is so.
